Filipino Boxer Banal piled points to retain WBO title vs Canadian Cave

Filipino AJ ‘Bazooka’ BANAL, 22,  decisioned Canadian Tyson ‘Prince of Hali’ Cage, 29,  via 8th round technical decision as headliner of the boxing package billed Pinoy Pride 7 Battle of Mactan, July. 30 at the Hoops Dome, Lapu-Lapu City.

Banal (R) defeats Cave
At the tick of 2:32 of round 8, Banal got the nod of all judges, with scores of 79-73, 78-74 and 78-74, retaining his WBO Asia-Pacific Bantamweight Title.
Banal tried to execute his game plan by concentrating on Cave’s body, but the wily Canadian did all tricks to keep away from Banal’s advances.
In round 1, Banal  unleased a left straight that staggered Cave , but the latter quickly feigned okay and did a little dance.
Rounds 2 to 4 was more of a cat and mouse game.  Banal looked frustrated as he chased Cave round the ring.  Catching his prey in the 3rd round in the ropes, Banal let go a left and right combo but the slippery Cave did a clinch to save him from real trouble.
The Filipino boxer suffered a cut above his right eye due to an unintentional headbutt early in the 5th round.  Bloody and vision greatly affected, Banal grew more furious, tagging Cave a good shot late in the round.  Cave failed to take advantage of the situation, instead did more grandstanding around the ring.
The combatants saw more wrestling than boxing in the 6th and 7th rounds, with Cave trying all possibilities to push Banal to the canvas.  All the more Banal became too frustrated with the kind of fighting in progress, because he couldn’t land with his punches and his impaired vision caused by blood from the cut above his eyes.
In the 8th round, the ring physician advised the referee to stop the fight.
